Alex Galchenyuk's girlfriend arrested after domestic dispute: report

The girlfriend of Montreal Canadiens centre Alex Galchenyuk was reportedly arrested on Sunday following a domestic dispute. 

According to La Presse, police were called to Galchenyuk's apartment early Sunday when an argument between the 21-year-old hockey player and the woman escalated. The woman was arrested after police determined she was the instigator of the dispute, according to the report.

Galchenyuk is not pressing charges, La Presse reported. Teammate Devante Smith-Pelly was also reportedly at the apartment when the incident occurred. 

Galchenyuk and Smith-Pelly met with general manager Marc Bergevin following Tuesday's practice in Brossard, Que. 

Neither player was made available to the media, but several teammates indicated that the situation was being dealt with internally. 

"That's a personal issue between Alex and his girlfriend. It's not something we're going to talk about at this time," Brendan Gallagher said.

"The team addressed the situation. They made us aware of what's going on. Like I said, it's going to be handled by the parties involved. It's not something that we're all that worried about."

Montreal police have confirmed they received a call from an apartment on the street where Galchenyuk lives.

Repeated off-ice problems

Bergevin has been busy with off-ice discipline this season.

In October, Zack Kassian was involved in an early morning car crash and was immediately put into the NHL Players' Association substance abuse program. Shortly after he got out in December, he was traded to Edmonton for goalie Ben Scrivens.

On Dec. 6, a video went viral of defenceman Nathan Beaulieu and forward Christian Thomas partying in a club and at an apartment on an off-day. A week later, Thomas was dealt to Arizona for minor-league forward Lucas Lessio.

Forward Lars Eller called it a lesson for Galchenyuk and Smith-Pelly about being an NHL player in a hockey-mad Canadian market.

"Just be smart and be careful of putting yourself in dangerous situations," said Eller. "If Alex had been a normal human being in this city I don't think it would have been a front page story, but because of who he is, everything he does is interesting to the general public.

"He knows that and now he gets a big reminder of that. Not that he did anything wrong, but I'm sure he won't put himself in difficult situations again, even though sometimes it's out of your hands."
