Defenceman Brendan Witt has signed a two-year, $6-million US contract extension with the New York Islanders.

Defenceman Brendan Witt has signed a two-year, $6-million US contract extension with the New York Islanders.

Known more for his defensive prowess, the Humboldt, Sask., native has scored three goals and added 18 assists with a rating of plus-6 in 140 games with the Islanders over two seasons.

In 12 NHL seasons with the Washington Capitals, Nashville Predators and the Islanders, the blue-liner has tallied 24 goals with 84 assists in 783 games.

Witt, drafted 11th overall by the Capitals in 1993, signed a three-year contract with the Islanders in 2006.
