CBCSports.ca senior hockey writer Tim Wharnsby picks Monday's top NHL performers:

FIRST STAR: Brian Elliott, G, Ottawa

The Senators netminder registered his fourth shutout of the season in Ottawa's important 2-0 win in Montreal. The Senators won for just the second time since the Olympic break. They now are 2-7-1 in their past 10 outings.

SECOND STAR: Henrik Zetterberg, C, Detroit

The Red Wings veteran checked in with two goals and an assist in Detroit's 3-1 win at home the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was the first trip back to Joe Louis Arena for the Penguins since they celebrated their Stanley Cup championship last June.

THIRD STAR: Ryan Smyth, LW, Los Angeles

Kings defenceman Drew Doughty scored the game winner in overtime on the power play, but it was Smyth in his customary spot just outside the crease as his teammate’s shot whizzed by for a 4-3 win at home against Colorado. Smyth scored his second of the game to put his team ahead 3-2 midway through the third period.
