Canadian coach Dave King was fired by German league team Adler Mannheim over the weekend.

King, 61, was let go by Adler on Saturday, one day after the team dropped a 5-2 decision to Kolner Haie. It was Adler's fifth loss in six games.

Assistant coach Teal Fowler took over behind the bench for Adler's regular-season finale on Sunday.

"We had to take this difficult decision to prevent further damage to the club," Adler GM Marcus Kuhl is quoted as saying on the German hockey league website. "We regret this move, but we had no more room to manoeuvre."

A native of North Battleford, Sask., King joined Adler in December 2007.

The former coach of the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets said in January he planned to leave Adler at the end of the season.
