Charges dropped against Montreal defenceman O'Byrne

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Ryan O'Byrne will not face charges following an incident at a Tampa Bay nightclub last February.

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Ryan O'Byrne will not face charges following an incident at a Tampa Bay nightclub last February.

Florida state attorney Pam Bondi said on Tuesday the charge of grand theft against the Victoria native was dropped after he read an apology in court to the victim and agreed to do community service in Canada.

O'Byrne and teammate Tom Kostopoulos were arrested outside a Tampa Bay nightclub after O'Byrne was accused of stealing a woman's purse and Kostopoulos was accused of resisting arrest.

Charges against Kostopoulos were dropped a few weeks after the incident.

O'Byrne signed a new three-year deal with the Canadiens two weeks ago.
