The Washington Capitals recalled defenceman Tyler Sloan from the American Hockey League ahead of Saturday night's game against the New York Rangers.

Sloan, 27, is a seven-year pro in his third season with the AHL's Hershey Bears. He signed with the Capitals as a free agent on July 2.

This is his second recall of the season, as he played four games with the Capitals last month. Sloan made his NHL debut on Oct. 21 in his hometown of Calgary and scored his first NHL goal on Oct. 25 against Dallas.

The Capitals needed an extra defenceman after Shaone Morrisonn suffered a groin injury in Thursday night's win over Carolina.
