Canadiens sign CHL's top assist man

The Montreal Canadiens announced Saturday they have secured one of junior hockey's top playmakers, inking forward Sergei Kostitsyn to a three-year deal.

The Montreal Canadiens announced Saturday they have secured one of junior hockey's top playmakers,inking forward Sergei Kostitsyn to a three-year deal.

The 20-year-old Belarusian tallied 40 goals and a Canadian Hockey League-high 91 assists in 59 regular-season games in 2006-07 with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. That was good for third place in the OHL scoring race.

Kostitsyn added nine goals and 11 assists in 16 playoff contests to help the Knights reach the OHL's Western Conference final, where they fell to the eventual league-champion Plymouth Whalers in five games.

In two seasons with London, the six-foot, 190-pound winger has 66 goals and 143 assists in 122 regular-season games.

Kostitsyn — the younger brother of Andrei Kostitsyn, who has played34 games for the Canadiens over the last two seasons—was selected by Montreal in the seventh round (200th overall) of the 2005 draft.
