Nicklas Backstrom has agreed to a new contract with the Washington Capitals, sources have confirmed to Hockey Night in Canada's Scott Morrison.

The team has yet to announce the new deal, but the Capitals will likely make the deal public on Monday.

Backstrom, 22, set career-highs with 33 goals and 68 assists this season. He was third in the NHL in assists, and his 101 points ranked fourth.

The Swede just finished the final season of a three-year entry-level contract, worth $850,000 US per season. Given his recent statistics, he's likely in for a big raise and a long-term deal.
