Patriots cut kicker Gramatica

Veteran NFL kicker Martin Gramatica was released by the New England Patriots on Wednesday.

Veteran kicker Martin Gramatica was released by the New England Patriots on Wednesday.

Gramatica, 30, was signed by the Patriots in April after the team lost standout kicker Adam Vinatieri to the Indianapolis Colts via free agency.

The transaction paves the way for rookie Stephen Gostkowski to take over starting kicking duties in New England this season.

Gramatica spent most of his six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buenos Aires native holds the team's all-time records for field goals made, with 137, and most points scored, with 591.

The former Pro Bowl kicker was released by Tampa Bay following the 2004 campaign and didn't play in the NFLlast season.
