Canadians Moran and Casper win bronze at synchro diving event

Mandy Moran of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Calgary's Hailey Casper won the bronze medal in the women's three-metre synchro competition at a FINA Grand Prix diving event in Madrid on Sunday.

Two Canadians picked up medals in synchronized diving at a FINA Grand Prix event in Madrid on Sunday.

Mandy Moran of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Calgary's Hailey Casper won the bronze medal in the women's three-metre synchro competition at the international diving meet.

"It went really well," Moran said. "Our synchronization was on, but our individual dives could have been better.

"It's great to get the medal. We have both been competing recently at different venues so we didn't have the opportunity to train as much as we would have liked for this event."

Moran, 28, and Casper, 16, finished with 270.27 points. China's Lin Qu and Qulin Zheng won the event with 312.60 points, and Italy's Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape were second with 300.90

It marks only the second time Moran and Casper have competed together in the three-metre synchro event.

"It's a great opportunity for me to compete in this event with Mandy," said Casper. "She has a lot of international experience and she is someone I've always looked up to."

Casper is one of Canada's top junior divers and plans to compete at the Pan American junior championship in September, hosted by Calgary.

Kevin Geyson, of Winnipeg, was seventh in the men's 10-metre competition. China's Yanquang Zhang of China won the gold.
