Slava Medvedenko signed by Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks signed veteran forward Slava Medvedenko on Thursday.

The Atlanta Hawks signed free-agent forward Slava Medvedenko on Thursday.

Contract terms were not disclosed.

Medvedenko, 27, had sat idle since being waived March 6 by the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Ukrainian veteran has averaged 5.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 13.0 minutes in 249 NBA games (58 starts) since signing with Los Angeles on Aug. 15, 2000.

Medvedenko, who helped the Lakers win NBA titles in 2001 and 2002, will fill the void left by injured forward Josh Smith, who underwent hernia surgery on Tuesday.

Atlanta waived forward Matt Freije to make room on the roster for Medvedenko.

Freije, 24, came off the bench in 19 games for the Hawks, posting 40 points and 24 rebounds in 147 minutes.
