Grizzlies' Gay shelved with staph infection
The Memphis Grizzlies confirmed Tuesday that forward Rudy Gay is suffering from a staph infection "in his leg area."
Gay, who led the Grizzlies in scoring last season, was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's 102-85 exhibition loss at Miami.
He is expected to be a game-time decision for Wednesday's pre-season finale versus the Orlando Magic.
Gay, 22, averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals and 37.0 minutes in 81 starts last season, his second in the NBA.
He started in 43 of 78 games as a rookie pro, averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 27.0 minutes
Gay was drafted eighth overall out of Connecticut in 2006 by the Houston Rockets, who promptly traded him and Stromile Swift to Memphis for Shane Battier two weeks later.
