Winning bucket lifts Canadians to victory in FIBA bronze-medal game

Canada's Cory Joseph drains the last second shot to give Canada the bronze medal in Mexico City 0:54

Cory Joseph ensured that Canada left the FIBA Americas championship with something to show for their efforts when he hit a buzzer-beater in the bronze-medal game against Mexico on Saturday night.

After a heartbreaking 79-78 loss to Venezuela that put Canada's chances to qualify for the 2016 Olympics on hold, Joseph and his teammates responded with a gutsy performance against Mexico.

In another close contest, Mexico's Francisco Cruz drove the lane and hit the go-ahead bucket with 6½ seconds remaining, however thanks to Joseph, that lead would not hold up.

The 24-year-old point guard, who will play for the Toronto Raptors this season, had something else in mind.

He received the inbounds pass from Kelly Olynyk under Canada's basket, dribbled up the court and challenged his defender before stepping back and calmly swishing a two-pointer as time expired to make the score 87-86.
