Blue Jays claim 1B Mauro Gomez off waivers

The Toronto Blue Jaus have claimed first baseman Mauro Gomez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and have optioned him to triple-A Buffalo.

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed first baseman Mauro Gomez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and have optioned him to triple-A Buffalo.

Gomez made his major league debut last season with Boston, posting a .275 batting average in 37 games with two home runs and 17 runs batted in.

The six-foot-two, 230-pound native of Bani, Dominican Republic has a .281 career minor league average with 130 home runs and 512 RBIs over nine seasons.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated right-hander David Bush for assignment.
