The Arizona Diamondbacks were awarded baseball's 2011 all-star game, manager Bob Melvin confirmed Friday before his team's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to make the official announcement Saturday.

"I'm excited. It's a long time coming," Melvin said. "With the NBA all-star game, which was well-received here, I know our building can be shown off for the first time in that type of scenario. I'm sure the fans of Phoenix are excited about it and it will be well-received here."

The franchise started as an expansion team in 1988 and will host the mid-season classic for the first time at Chase Field.

This year's contest takes place in St. Louis, while the Los Angeles Angels play host to the event in 2010.
