Jennerich takes 2nd rowing gold of the season

Rower Lindsay Jennerich of Victoria picked up her second World Cup medal of 2008, taking the 2,000-metre women's single lightweight event Saturday in Poznam, Poland.

Jennerich, who won the Lucerne World Cup recently, was first in seven minutes, 30.95 seconds. Ireland's Sinead Jennings, who led most of the way, took silver in 7:31.59, and Austria's Michaela Taupe-Traer was third in 7:39.36.

"It was good to win again," Jennerich said. "I really have to hand it to Sinead. She got out in front and I let her go.

"It wasn't until about 500 metres to go that I checked for her and really the gap hadn't grown, so I waited for the red buoy [at 250 metres] and then jacked it.

"It's nice to come out on top with someone that accomplished that you know is pushing you that much. Her strength gave me the opportunity to rise to the occasion."

In the women's double, Janine Hanson of Winnipeg and Krista Guloien of Port Moody, B.C., advanced to the final after finishing second in their rep in 7:06.88. The Finish crew who won in 7:06.63, leaving the Belarusians and New Zealand's Evers-Swindell sisters relegated to the B final.

"We did not have a great heat yesterday, so we came ready to go hard this afternoon," Guloien said. "The tailwind was strong, but thankfully we have trained in these conditions a lot."

Canadian boats will be in four finals Sunday — the lightweight women's double, women's double, women's pair and the women's eight. The women's eight recently qualified for the Olympics and Sunday will be the Canadian boat's final international race before Beijing.

Canada's male rowers have taken a pass on this regatta, preferring to train back home.
