Eleanor spoke with P.D. James at the time of the publication of her memoir, Time to be in Earnest.  The title was taken from a quote by Dr. Samuel Johnson - that at the age of 77 it was time to be in earnest.  Her memoir was written in the form of a partial diary, of the year between her 77th and 78th birthdays.  To mark her passing at the age of 94, we bring you this warm and lively conversation from fifteen years ago.

" I think that people who write mysteries need to make an ordered world, to solve puzzles, to affirm the sanctity of life.  To affirm our own belief that we live in a rational and comprehensible universe, and that we can bring justice out of injustice." - P.D. James
