Multi-talented James McBride-musician, journalist, author

Writer/musician James McBride was so taken aback when he won the 2013 National Book Award that he walked up to the podium with his dinner napkin in his hand, and no prepared speech. But he nailed it anyway. He's on Writers & Company this week.

James McBride was the surprise winner of the 2013 National Book Award, for his novel The Good Lord Bird.  It's a comic treatment of controversial abolitionist John Brown, who led a violent crusade against slavery.

"I came to the understanding that this business of racism and race, it's all a bunch of puff and smoke.  It's real if you let it be real.  To me, it's not real, it's about humanity." - James McBride
