Coast Guard rescues man after failed attempt to pilot water taxi from Granville Island to Hawaii

Last week a Vancouver man made headlines when he was picked up by the Canadian Coast Guard 11 miles off the coast of Tofino. Chris Getsby sent out a distress signal after realizing the water taxi he was piloting would not make it to Hawaii.

Last week a Vancouver man made headlines when he was picked up by the Canadian Coast Guard 11 miles off the coast of Tofino. Chris Getsby sent out a distress signal after realizing the water taxi he was piloting would not make it to Hawaii.

"She was taking on water and I realized my 14 horsepower engine would struggle to make the 4000km crossing," said Getsby. "[It] sucks for sure, I really thought I could do it."
