Reasons to embrace the dark
"For most of human history ... every aspect of our lives has really been governed by the rising and the setting of the sun. And so when you introduce ever higher and higher degrees of artificial lighting, you precipitate changes in the mind, in the body and how we relate to the planet. It really is *the* game changer. "
Clark Strand believes the soul plays a steep price for electric light (and no, we're not talking about hydro bills). He has been studying the world's spiritual traditions for more than thirty years. He's a former Zen monk and was the first senior editor of Tricycle: The Buddhist Review.
In his book, Waking Up To The Dark, Strand explores how drastically electricity has changed us as people.
Strand believes the middle-of-the-night bouts of insomnia commonly known as 'the hour of the wolf' have the potential to be 'the hour of God.'
His advice? Embrace your 3 a.m. awakenings. Darkness is as good as it gets for the soul.
3 reasons why you should embrace your 3 a.m. awakenings
1. In the old days, people used to wake up in the middle of the night for about an hour. It was part of our primordial sleep pattern. The middle of the night is the perfect time to cuddle with your loved one without distractions.
2. Studies have shown that there's a link between how much sleep we get and our weight. People who get too little sleep tend to weight more than those who get a proper night's sleep.
3. You don't need to replace the furniture so often. Scuffs and scratches just disappear in the dark.
