Artist Peter Matthews gets intimate with nature by bringing his art into the ocean
"The ocean is, in a sense, writing and drawing itself," artist Peter Matthews explains.
Matthews' drawing process is unlike many. He takes his canvas into the water with him, submerges himself in his inspiration (the ocean, nature) and, as he says, simply becomes the instrument in which he allows "that visual dialogue, that mapping process to unfold."
It's not an easy task, as one may imagine, and Matthews is prone to losing pieces of work in the water. "That moment of losing a drawing is always a very emotional and quite poetic experience," he says. "The drawing has gone somewhere and it's this state of flux...I quite like that give and take."
