All month we'll count down the top 20 albums of 2015 — our annual list of must-hear albums.

While major Canadian pop stars were breaking sales records this year, Grimes snuck in under the radar and challenged perceptions of what pop music should sound like.

Inspired by a brief stay in California, the Canadian singer and producer reimagines the state's kitsch and natural expanse through sounds inspired by dance music, k-pop and, yep, even a bit of country. Art Angels isn't just a stunning comeback album from the former queen of lo-fi pop, it's a statement of intent for a long career ahead.
