You might not be familiar with the name Chavela Vargas, but there's a good chance you'll recognize her music. Vargas was a trailblazer whose unique ranchera sound has been has been used in a number of films, including the 2002 biopic Frida. Today, Catherine Gund, the co-director of a new documentary called Chavela sheds some light on the singer and explains why she was such an important figure in Latin music.​
