They are marketed around the world as a symbol of love and commitment.But in Sierra Leone diamonds have a much darker history.The gems helped finance rebel fighters that terrorized the country during its bloody civil war.Now ,a decade after the war ended the diamond mining continues in Sierra Leone. Very little of that money ends up in the hands of the people that pulled the diamonds from the ground. that's something a Canadian NGO is trying to change.
