As It Happens: The Friday Edition

Dec. 3, 2021

Episode Transcript

Part One

Omicron: Transport minister
It began with travel bans — but Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says that Canadians should be prepared for other new measures, as the government ramps up its response to the Omicron variant.

BC 911 operators
Emergency dispatchers in B.C. are speaking out about a new directive that may mean 911 callers spend time waiting on the phone while waiting for an ambulance.

IKEA sleepover
When a snowstorm hit Denmark this week, a group of shoppers and employees found themselves bunking down in an IKEA showroom — which one overnight visitor says was a cozy dream come true.

Part Two

Yukon midwives
New regulations in Yukon mean the territory's only midwife is no longer eligible to practice there — which she says doesn't just cost her her livelihood, but penalizes her clients as well.

Diagram Prize winner
The winner of this year's Diagram Prize tells us he's delighted to take home the award for the year's oddest book title with "Is Superman Circumcised?" — but that doesn't mean you should judge his book by its cover.

Part Three

Encore: Andrew O'Hagan
In Andrew O'Hagan's novel "The Illuminations" a disillusioned soldier returns home to Scotland from Afghanistan and is left questionning the moral underpinnings of the so-called 'war on terror'. We'll revisit his 2015 conversation with Carol about "The Illuminations", a book that's as timely now as it was then.
