New Carlisle gathers for community bonspiel

New Carlisle curling rinkOne of the well know treasures of New Carlisle is the curling rink. This gem is a real ice rink, with no artificial refrigeration. For each of the past ten winters, dozens and dozens of people from the community and beyond crowd into the rink over the course of a weekend for the Linda Lemore-Brown Cancer Foundation bonspiel. Cathy Brown is one of the founders. Susan spoke with Cathy and Maria Chatterton about the big weekend.

Dwayne Boudreau is one of the people in charge of the ice for the curling rink. The job involves taking the raw ingredients of winter -- ice and water -- and creating curling sheets fit for a bonspiel. He spoke with our producer Kim Garritty, when we were in New Carlisle in late January.

Boudreau says he loves working in the cold. "Your ice is a piece of art. It's a piece of art that everybody gets to see every night."
