Learning to read in prison
More than a decade ago, the Eastern Townships-based Yamaska Literacy Council received a call from a chaplain at the local men's penitentiary looking for support for an English-speaking inmate. Since then, the council has gradually developed a regular literacy program for inmates at the Cowansville prison, to help them prepare to reintegrate into their communities after serving their sentences.
Our Sarah Rogers went to see what the program means to both its tutors and participants.
