An award-winning journalist Barton was most recently the host of CBC News The National Network's daily political show, Power & Politics. She has interviewed many high-profile politicians including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde.

In 2016 she received the Canadian Screen Award for best host of a news or information program. During the 2015 Canadian federal election campaign, Barton guided viewers through 11 weeks of election issues, interviewing all main party leaders through the course of the campaign, and broadcasting 6 days a week. Her incisive and engaging interviewing style was recognized with a Canadian Screen Award for best news host in 2016.

Prior to becoming host of Power & Politics, Barton was a National reporter with CBC's Parliamentary Bureau, covering federal elections, as well as a number of federal leadership campaigns. She covered the fraud trial of Conrad Black in Chicago in 2007, and more recently the Mike Duffy fraud trial. She also covered the public inquiry into the dealings between former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Karlheinz Schreiber in 2008, and the shooting in Ottawa on October 22nd, 2014.

Barton joined CBC as Quebec's legislative reporter at the National Assembly in 2004. She covered Jean Charest's arrival as Premier in Quebec for his first mandate and the intense leadership race within the Parti Quebecois that followed the resignation of Bernard Landry. She covered a number of provincial elections in Quebec both with CBC Television and Global News. Barton was in Montreal on the day of the shooting at Dawson College where she was one of the first reporters on the scene reporting live.

Barton started her journalism career in her home town of Winnipeg as a researcher for CBC's French news network, RDI. She has a degree in French literature from College Universitaire de Saint-Boniface and a Master's degree in Journalism from Carleton University.
