Bristol Road Middle School Mississauga, Ontario

Our Playlist

One of the biggest things we discovered after doing this challenge is that some students don’t realize how good Canadian music is and how many genres of Canadian music there are. One student said: “I found it interesting to learn about the Junos and to find new Canadian artists that were kind of undiscovered, had amazing voices and powerful lyrics”. We had themes which helped us narrow our search, and we really liked the ‘Summer’ songs we discovered, including Bryan Adams, Lights, Tegan and Sara, Dylan Mackenzie, and Carly Rae Jepsen. They all have such talent and amazing voices. Lights and Tegan and Sara definitely gained a few new fans after we listened to their music as a class when making our list. We are glad we found these songs and now have a new world of music which we can enjoy!

Our Playlist

We had a lot of fun with this challenge. It gave us a chance to explore new songs that we don’t normally listen to, especially with having to find songs specific to a theme. We wondered why we haven’t heard of these great songs before. Here are some quotes from classmates:

“This challenge helped me see that not all country music is the same… after all these years.”

“I found out how much I actually like rock music”

“This challenge helped me open up and see how many different (genres).” The

class found new songs to dance to including Crabbuckit and Here We Go! Very appealing

dance songs. Heart of Lies was a cool video-game sounding song and Steal My

Sunshine is very pop-sounding. We know our list touches on unrelated genres but

they are all great songs in their own way so we couldn’t follow a theme.

In a year like no other when anxieties run high and mental health needs are as evident as ever, students are seeking ways to nurture a sense of hope and meaning. Our 5/6 class at Sacred Heart followed the vision of imagining a world where all are empowered to reach their full potential through faith and service. These are student unafraid to share their voice; without fear of exploring new ideas and an openness to seek answers. In fitting with our board multi-year strategic improvement plan, we chose the theme of “All Are Welcome in This Place”, reminding us that as a Catholic education community, our first step is to establish relationships and ensure that every person feels a genuine sense of belonging. “I chose (a violin piece) by Adrian A because he’s a very good violinist and he has quite an amazing back story, and he is from our home town of Mississauga!”

“I like the song because there’s a transition that’s really cool. It starts with old style and then turns into rock and roll. It’s a song I don’t really listen to but it’s underrated for it’s style.”

“We discovered different genres of music (as performed by Canadians) such as hip hop, jazz, country, and folk music”

“I learned that Canada has a whole big diverse group of musicians, languages, and music!”

It’s amazing how many amazing talented musicians our country has!

We are glad we found these songs and now have a new world of music which we can enjoy! We also found the MAPL system interesting.

The Canadian Playlist Challenge was a very interesting challenge for our class! We learned a lot about our listening choices, we discovered amazing Canadian artists and we also (embarrassingly) didn’t realize some of the music artists we already listen to were Canadian. We even had a very enriching experience discovering Aboriginal music from all over the country. One really special song we learned was O Siem - Susan Aglukark – It had a great message. There is so much diversity of music from our country and this challenge has given us new musical choices, especially realizing that there are other genres besides the ones we usually listen to. Our playlist theme is a combination of Juno nominated artists/songs we associate with hanging out in the summer, reading a book or doing a puzzle. Some of us in the class didn’t even know the history of the Juno awards – great challenge!

Our Playlist

We were surprised to learn that songs we liked were performed by Canadians. We were looking through music spanning the last few decades so we mixed old with the new and discovered many cool genres and artists. For example, we like the vibe of Alex Cuba and Kim Mitchell for summer chill-out songs. We think it’s very important to listen to Canadian music from the east coast, west coast, and all around our country. One student never thought they could mix Aboriginal music and classical music to make an interesting song such as Jeremy Dutcher. Another student realized that they could appreciate country music instead of dismissing it. Older songs like The Hockey Song and The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald tell really interesting stories from our country’s history. We are all very glad we had a chance to discover these new songs and artists, at least new to us.

Mr. Zelem's Grade 7/8 Stingers

St. Bernard of Clairvaux Waterford, Ontario

Our Playlist

The St. Bernard Stingers of Waterford, Ontario created a playlist to include as many entertaining Canadian iconic songs as possible. In true Rick Mercer fashion, our video shows the impact of how “music brings people closer together”. During challenging times, everyone could use an inspirational playlist. Why not listen to these songs on a family road trip? This Canadian playlist had to include songs that parents and kids could share together. As a class, each student created a Top 5 list of preferred Canadian songs. The challenge we placed on ourselves was to include songs that were both familiar and unfamiliar by asking family members or using online resources. Our entire class listened to this extensive list and we democratically narrowed it down to fifteen idealistic and diverse Canadian songs that met the criteria. Nothing like great Canadian music to keep the whole family rocking in the car.

Our Playlist

Nowadays, it’s incredibly easy to get caught up in the monotony of life. Our lives lack the romance often glorified in movies. Adopting main character energy means choosing to romanticize tasks, allowing for more happiness in your life.

In this mixtape, we allowed ourselves to express our own main character energy and harness that energy through song. We chose each song because they helped us romanticize our own lives and empowered us to be ourselves. The main character is someone around whom the story revolves and who will have a soundtrack to their life. This soundtrack is most fitting to our class’s coming of age movie, in which we all play the starring role.

Main character energy music is important because oftentimes our lives seem less interesting than we want them to be. It’s important to romanticize our lives through Canadian music because Canada has so much music to offer.

Our Playlist

Who knew “A Little Music” could become “Our Song”? We just want to “Sing, Sing” until “Tomorrow is Coming”. We don’t have to ask “Is Somebody Singing” because when we sing, “We Are One”. We love to “Sing It Together”; sharing music is truly our “Hymn to Freedom”.

At SAM, our ⅞’s compiled a playlist with a variety of MAPL approved music: bouncing between Music Monday Anthems and JUNO award winning hits: the first anthem to the most recent, and in the years in between, a mix of popular songs.

These wonderful Canadian songs mean so much more to us than just great songs selected for our list; they also represent teamwork. We are a new school combining three school communities in very uncertain times. With old and new friends, we prove what being Canadian truly means: we differ yet we connect, and music is our shared language.

BONUS TRACK: To bring our playlist right up to 2020, our song number 16 is a hidden track called “Monster”. This very recent collaboration by Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber debuted in just November of this year!

Our Playlist

Our class chose to use emotions as our playlist theme. While working on this project, we listened to lots of music from across the country. We listened to artists ranging from JUNO award winners to emerging artists. To begin, we will help you experience joy as we take you down the highway with, Life is a Highway. Next are songs of love, where you will listen to En Amour. Our sadness collection was created to celebrate Remembrance Day. There are songs expressing the anger Canadians experience, including The Red Dress which is a song about social injustice toward Indigenous Canadians. Finally, the last song reminds us what it means to be Canadian. When we were finished, we were all very proud of our work and we imagine many of us will broaden our own personal playlists at home. Please enjoy our playlist and feel all the emotions with us.

Our Playlist

The sound of a thunderstorm can sound intimidating at first. The seemingly endless pouring rain and bright flashes of lightning are enough to dampen your spirits, as well as the streets. But what if you learn to accept the storm? What if, instead of hiding under your covers when dark clouds come rolling in, you instead slip on a bright yellow raincoat and dance in the rain? Sometimes it is difficult to see past the rain and troubles, but a surefire way to lift your spirits is by dancing, and unleashing your soul. Music allows us to break free from our troubles and find a moment of escape. In a time of what seems like endless cloudy days, it’s important to find something in life that brings pleasure, instead of fear. That’s what these 15 Canadian songs are about; pushing past sorrowful days and dancing through them like nobody’s watching.

“Warming Up”, a process all Canadians are familiar with, is the theme of QES Music Club’s playlist! Our list warms up with slow songs and ends with fast ones. We chose the songs on the list by sharing our favourite Canadian songs and then voting on those we thought were best. Our playlist represents our school and its students. When you start listening to the list, you will sway slowly to the music, but by the end you will feel like you’re at a party!

QES Music Club meets online and is facilitated through Google Classroom. The club is open to all students in grades four, five and six, including those learning at school and those currently learning online. Many students took part in this project and learned a lot about Canadian music past and present. Thank you, CBC and MusiCounts!

Our Playlist

Our class listened to a lot of great Canadian music and ranked our favourites to create our Pandemic Playlist. Students were also asked to comment on the appeal of each song. It is no wonder that Shawn Mendes was number one, but some of the other picks may be a surprise. A common theme for songs chosen are ones that calm us- and who doesn’t need that right now. No fewer than five students described Cohen’s Hallelujah as calming. The word calm was also used after listening to Hold On, Heart of Gold and Northwest Passage. The most unique and heartfelt response was “I feel like I can do anything” after listening to Big Yellow Taxi.

  1. Wonder Shawn Mendes

We chose the Canadian Indigenous Artist to be our topic in the CBC playlist contest because it brings a lot of diversity into the world of music. Their music holds traditions that each indigenous song has. In our school, Vista Hills we acknowledge and empathize with indigenous people’s traditions and their history, and their everyday struggles as indigenous people. By listening to indigenous artists not only do we enjoy the songs but we listen, we listen to the meanings and the history behind every word.

We chose the topic “Music we can dance to” because a lot of people love to dance and sing because they are really catchy. Another reason why we chose this topic is because people that are sad can listen to that type of music and dance their troubles away. Third, I think that most songs are songs that you can dance to. People have different types of music they like so the topic “music we can dance to” can include any song! Lastly, because of Covid-19 some of us have to stay quarantined but you can also listen to music and dance and to just have fun in these times. Those are 4 reasons why we chose the topic “Music we can dance to!”

Climbing Beyond Mountains - Our playlist recognizes artists who have gone through hardships in their lives and overcame their own obstacles. These lyrics describe personal experiences of different types of adversity, such as anxiety, the loss of loved ones, poverty, cancer, and gender discrimination. We chose this theme as we feel it’s important to recognize that everyone, even those who may seem to have it all, have their own mountains to climb. Upon learning of these artists’ difficulties, a whole different perspective is gained when listening to their lyrics. We can understand where they’re coming from and the emotions they feel while writing and performing. The effects of this pandemic have impacted many people within our community, in numerous ways. Grade 4 & 5 Music with Ms. Hartery

Bel Ayr Elementary Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Our Playlist

We had so much fun creating our playlist of songs from the years we were born. We are a Grade 4 and 5 split class so our birthdays are between 2009-2012 - that is A LOT of Canadian music to listen to. Narrowing it down to just 15 songs was very hard because we liked so much of the music.

We are not allowed to sing in school because of the pandemic. It was fun to work on this playlist together when we can’t have our typical Music classes. We learned about Cancon, the MAPL system and the CRTC. We had no idea that the songs on the radio were regulated and that they HAD to play Canadian Content.

Thank you CBC for creating this fun way for us to learn about Canadian music.

Grade 6 Music with Ms. Hartery

Bel Ayr Elementary Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Our Playlist

We are Grade 6 students from Nova Scotia. We wanted to explore Canadian Hip-Hop and R&B music. R&B in 2020 is a fusion of pop and soul and can be used to express feelings. We LOVED R&B tunes like Jessie Reyez’ “Figures,” Justin Bieber’s “Lonely” and everything by The Weeknd. We discovered that we didn’t know much about the Canadian hip-hop scene until we started this project. We learned that hip-hop is a culture, not just a style of music. The culture has 4 main elements: deejaying, rap, break-dancing and graffiti. Diving into the rise of Canadian hip-hop with artists like Maestro Fresh-Wes and Devon has made us into new fans.

The class of 2023 came up with 15 songs for 15 years. We are all 15 years old and have experienced life in many different ways. We learned that many of our favourite bands, which span across a plethora of genres, are Canadian. This means that many of our songs are representative of all of our collective interests, and this makes our list that much more personal. We also learned that songs that we would not normally listen to, like the francophone hit, Je Veux Tout by Ariane Moffatt, can actually be really appealing. Despite the fact that all of us have different tastes, we were able to come up with a playlist that we all genuinely enjoy.

Our playlist highlights the wide variety of music that makes our class want to get up, dance, and tap our toes! This year especially, we all must make an effort to find joy somehow, and we would like to lift as many spirits as possible through the power of music. The pandemic may have put physical distance between us, but there are few things that unite us more than sharing music and expressing ourselves through dance. Our selections reflect the diversity of music enjoyed by the variety of our group, and this diversity is something key to our identity as Canadians. Furthermore, our playlist illustrates our enthusiastic classroom environment, which we hope is far more infectious than any kind of virus out there. Get up, and enjoy this playlist wherever you are!

Our Playlist

The songs we picked all fit into our category “About Life”. We chose the topic of ‘life’ because a lot of artists express their experiences and feelings through song. Most artists start off small, but become much greater by setting life goals and by working hard, they might use those experiences to write songs. Artist’s also express their thoughts about relationships and their loved ones through song. Imagine there was no music? How would they express themselves? Many artists start at a young age and they had no friends or companions when they went on tour and did not even go to a real school, that is not a good life for a kid. So music was the consent thing in their life that helped them get through hard times. Music can not only get them through the tough times, but would also help them express great happiness or could be used to talk about the world around them. Music is not only important for those who make it but for all of us who listen to it. It can bring back memories, and help us to express the way we are feeling. Music is considered the most important forms of art. ‘About Life’ is a topic that everyone can relate to and that can bring us all together, which is why we chose to make our playlist about life.

Our school is named after Shannen Koostachin because she was a noble and courageous person. We chose this topic because Shannen Koostachin fought for her school and her rights as a person. Her school was very unsafe and contaminated with toxic gas. The students also had to walk 10 minutes just to get to their gym, and they didn’t have good places to learn. This playlist is about someone who fought for her school. We need to show how we care about people and to respect their rights and listen to their opinions. Unfortunately, Shannen passed away at the age of 15, but we continue to honour her in our school community. We hope that you enjoy learning about Shannen Koostachin through the music playlist we created.

The Treble Makers

Menihek High School Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador

Our Playlist

Our class wanted to showcase the spirit of our province with our playlist “Havin’ A Time in NL.” Each song tells a story, and celebrates the people. We started with traditional songs but also included less traditional songs. This playlist not only showcases the meaning of a Newfoundland celebration, it also opened doors into our own culture that we didn’t even know existed. When Newfoundlanders get together to honor an occasion, there is always laughter, fast music, and a strong beat. Violins, accordions, and ugly sticks are featured in many of these songs. Not only were we nodding and stomping along to the beat, but we were also working together to create something memorable. Through teamwork and collaboration, we were able to create this testament to Newfoundland and Labrador culture both new and old. We hope that you will have the same sense of family and fun that we felt!

Cardinal Carter Middle School Leamington, Ontario

Our Playlist

Our class is comprised of 11 students who are attending our virtual school this year in Leamington, Ontario. They are a group of grade 7 students in the International Bacclaureate program at Cardinal Carter Middle School. They were very excited to participate in this challenge and worked to create an original theme showcasing a variety of artists who all mention a place in Canada in their song. Unfortunately, spelling and the use of spell check are not their greatest strength! As their teacher, I was so impressed with their varied list of musicians and the fact they didn’t immediately jump to musicians of their own knowledge like Shawn Mendez and Justin Bieber, but instead really researched the Canadian music industry and showcased the vast talent Canada has to offer!

Our Playlist

We are part of the Waterloo Region Distance School Board’s Distance Learning Program. We are a diverse grade 6 class that comes from Cambridge, Waterloo and Ayr, Ontario. We wanted to create a list that showed Canada’s Diversity but also highlighted Social Issues important to Canadians. Our theme is Social Issues. We discovered some amazing artists that we never would have heard about were it not for this project. We also discovered that it was tricky to find songs about social issues without some rage and therefore some swearing. Some of the songs that we had to cut were definitely powerful and spoke to a Social Issue so strongly but we had to omit them because of the swearing. This project was a great way for us to work together as a class in the Distance Learning environment and discover new artists and genres. Here is our list in no particular order!

Taproots (Gr. 7-8)

Prairie Sky School Regina, Saskatchewan

Our Playlist

Our class took part in “The Great Canadian Playlist Challenge” by making a playlist of 15 songs. These are some of the requirements: all of the songs have to be sung by Canadian artists and there have to be 15 songs. The playlist had to stick to a theme and at least 5 of the artists in your playlist must have a Juno award or have been nominated for a Juno award. The first thing we did was brainstorming Canadian artists. Then we decided on a theme, which was “happy”. We chose the theme “happy” because it seemed like the best option, and I guess we were feeling happy that day. Then we found a bunch of songs and voted on each one until we narrowed it to 15. It was a pretty fun thing to do as a class, and we hope you enjoy our playlist!

Our playlist consists of artists that fall under the genres of Country, Pop, Rock, Alternative Rock, Folk Rock, Indie Rock, Pop Rock, Jazz, Blues Rock, Art Pop, etc.
The age of the Ontario artists we have chosen vary from young to old, and their backgrounds and cultures vary as well.
Our journey was short but we learned a lot about Canadian music and about the variety of artists from Ontario. We discovered new artists and developed a new appreciation for the talent of Ontario musicians.
Our choices were influenced by our parents, teachers, and fellow students but ultimately, the choice was ours.
We feel that our playlist theme is FANTASTIC because it is important to appreciate the artists and musicians in your own home province. Enjoy!

Our playlist theme is winter, it features a wide variety of artists and spans fifty years. Winter can be sad and lonely like Avril Lavigne’s I’m With You and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. Winter can also be happy like Bryan Adams’ Reggae Christmas. Nothing says canadian content and winter better than Take off, for some of us Wavin Flag will be forever connected to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. We each prepared a three minute presentation about our chosen song. We learned a lot about canadian music, and discovered many canadian artists. Winter is part of the canadian identity. Think about an immigrant family experiencing their first canadian winter. We hear a lot of american music on the radio. We also hear canadian artists, the Canadian Music Playlist Challenge opened our eyes to even more Canadian music. We hope this playlist takes you to the winter wonderland that it brought us to.

Mr. Schneider, Grade 8, Room 203

Pope Francis Catholic School Toronto, Ontario

Our Playlist

This playlist is being submitted by Mr. Schneider’s grade 8 music class at Pope Francis School, located at 319 Ossington Avenue in Toronto’s west end. Our class size is about 24, and we have a mostly Portuguese population here at the school. I myself (Mr. Schneider) have been teaching some of these students for three years now, and they really are an awesome group! Band is offered at Pope Francis for students in Gr. 7 & 8. Students play Flute, Trumpet, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trombone, Baritone, and Percussion. Typically we would be preparing to play for our annual Christmas concert, but because of COVID, we cannot play our instruments at school! The students have really enjoyed doing this project, as it has been fun learning about Canadian musicians that they’ve never heard before. There were many ideas as to what our theme was going to be for the playlist, including a ‘Canadian Christmas’ playlist, a ‘90’s playlist, ‘Oldies but Goodies’ playlist, etc. The students chose to do a Rap/RnB/Hip-Hop playlist, titled, ‘The Great Canadian Rap/RnB/&Hip-Hop Playlist’ We hope you enjoy our playlist, and thank both CBC and MusiCounts for this wonderful and engaging opportunity!

Our Playlist

Our playlist is meant to show the difference between the older rhythm-rap based style hip hop to the newer, more structured style. We have songs from the late 80s all the way to the late 2010s. The learning experience was very amazing to see all these different types of hip hop and researching different artists. I think the best example of that was I was researching different artists and I came across Maestro Fresh Wes and he is one of my favourites. That just really goes to show how great this learning experience was. And what’s really cool is I wasn’t the only one to share that experience I shared with my class. So overall this was such a fun and great experience and I hope you enjoy the diversity between the two different styles we have.

Our Playlist

For the CBC Playlist Competition, we learned many things along the way and had an amazing experience. As a class, we learned about new artists, themes and styles of music. We also learned about the MAPL System and the history of it. We enjoyed listening to different types of music. To select the songs, we made sure that the songs portrayed our theme, which is emotions. We used voting to choose the songs for our playlist and we all had our say in the project. Our journey for this challenge has brought our class closer together and we enjoyed working on this. The Carrier Crew! (Mrs. Carrier's Grade 8 Class)

École Silverspring School Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Our Playlist

We are an energetic grade 8 class from École Silverspring School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We created a playlist based on social justice and the Charter of the Rights of the Child. We are a very privileged school and we wanted to make a playlist that reflected those less privileged than us. While learning about children’s rights some rights stood out to us: the right to your own identity, the freedom to your own thoughts, and freedom from discrimination. Our playlist is a mix of serious and uplifting: we want to bring attention to the seriousness of injustices, but still keep it light. We hope this inspires you to learn more about children’s rights and think about those less privileged than us. Even though COVID is a very serious situation, it has reminded us that we are all connected. We hope our playlist will help us all connect through music.

Mrs. Pianka's grade 6/7 class

Ogden Community Public School Thunder Bay, Ontario

Our Playlist

We’re a grade 6/7 class at Ogden Community Public School, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, a city that is close to the US border, on the west side of Lake Superior which played an important role in our playlist.

We had already done a reflection about The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, so we decided to use that as a starting point, so all our songs are based on weather. Our French teacher is also our music teacher, so she let us add a French song to our list. We chose the rest by listening to Canadian songs and we voted on which songs to add to our list. One group of students made the cover for the playlist and one other person made the Canadian flag to go into the middle, to hold it all together.
We really enjoyed learning about Canadian music!

Canada. Canada is made up of many regions. These regions are made up of people. These people compose music. All over Canada, music is created - from the West Coast to the East Coast, and everything in between. We as people are made up of many things, emotions, religion, and a limb or two. Music is also made up of many things from the deep groans of a bass to the tiniest chime of a triangle. Many different regions make up Canada, all unique yet part of the whole. Without different regions there would be no different cultural groups of people, without music, what would make these regions unique, and would we be as people? Music is a part of many of our lives. It brings us together through both excitement and sorrow. For our submission, we decided to look at music from different regions. Together we can all sorts of different music. Together we are Canada!

This playlist represents our generation because it highlights many popular songs that we have heard on the radio. It represents Canadian artists of our generation. Sometimes people forget that Canadians can make great music so it’s important to celebrate them.

We have listened to many of these songs throughout our lives. THIS is the music our generation listens to, THIS is the music we hear on the radio these days, and it is unique to this generation because popular music changes. Gen Z favourites

Gen Z’s are anyone born between 1995-2009. We believe we are the strongest generation because of all the movements we helped get the recognition they needed!

Gen z has already shown proof of an active social conscience. There are so many inspiring young adults here , such as Afghan teen Malala Yousafzai, who at age 18 became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Another example is 16 year old Greta Thunberg from Sweden being the youngest individual ever to be named the “Time’s 2019 Person of the Year”.

Some say we are just kids, but Gen Z is swaying the world with their activism around gun control, immigration reform, and so many other things.

These are our favourite songs, sure all gen Z’s have different taste in music but trust me none of us can resist these hits!

Our Playlist

The theme for our playlist is Canadian Storytelling. We chose this theme because everyone loves a great story. Some people like hip hop or country or even rock-and-roll music, so when we learned that this theme is diverse, we figured that we could add many different genres.

Throughout our experience our research became cross- curricular: instrumental music, then writing, art, media literacy, and music all combined in this one class submission! Two months of new learning around our Canadian Storytelling artists and their career history.
There are many artists that we had heard of before and many we were introduced to for the first time! Overall we had a blast doing this project and we hope to do something else like this in the future, or next year for CanCon 2021! Thanks for your interest in our new music discoveries up here at St. Henry, in Canada, eh!

If there’s one thing that can bring people together, it’s good music. In Six Decades of Canada’s Sick Hits, our class has compiled a collection of songs from 1967 to 2020, with 11 Juno nominees and winners. We give listeners a playlist with the true Canadian experience: freedom, hockey, and trucks. From “Fireworks” by The Tragically Hip, to “Big League” by Tom Cochrane and “The Rest of My Life” by Sloan, these pieces all tell legendary stories about our country. Many of these songs have deeper meanings than what meets the eye, such as Arcade Fire’s “Neighbourhood #3(Power Out)”, which tells a story not only about a blizzard, but also about the North American economic boom of the 80s and 90s. Our playlist takes the listener through the rollercoaster that is Canadian History. So, close your eyes, and let our playlist transport you through six decades of Canada’s greatest music.

“Harmonious Diversity” came after exploring the journeys of strong individuals who have come to Canada in search of peace and a new life. We searched for music that is created by people who are humble in their work and achievements, but proud of their homeland. Half of the songs we chose, were created by Juno artists who have sought solace in Canada and represented what it was like to leave home and come to a new land. The remaining songs we found represented how we should welcome new neighbors to all the amazing people, places and special Canadian tidbits. As Canadians, we proudly own our individual creativity but believe it must be shared. We are inspired by encouraging one another in our musical pursuits in a country where we are free to express ourselves creatively and are united in our differences

The theme that our class has selected for the CBC Canadian Music Playlist Challenge is Across Canada. Canada is a large, diverse country filled with people from all over the world. These varied experiences are what build up our musical genres, from the shipyards of Newfoundland to the Six in Toronto, all the way to the fields in the prairies. In these diverse places we find new genres, from underground rock, to the R&B revolution of the Six, and the sea shanties of the Atlantic. This diversity is woven deep into the fabric of our nation. The peoples, the history, and the land itself is so diverse it makes sense we would have an array of genres, but we come together with our pride of being Canadian. Our music perfectly reflects this and is a true reflection of what we listen to, and we hope you enjoy.

Our group chose to create our playlist around the theme “rainy day”. The playlist is filled with laid-back feeling songs someone might choose to listen to when it is raining.
