Is Saskatoon berry pie the quintessential prairie dessert?
Canada Post has released a series of stamps taking Canadians on a culinary tour of the country via regional desserts from Nanaimo bars to Blueberry grunt, the dessert they chose for Saskatchewan and the prairies is Saskatoon berry pie. Today on the program we asked if this sweet treat deserves the title of "The Quintessential Prairie Dessert". We had Karalyn Harris, a Cree knowledge keeper, Amy Jo Ehman, author of the Prairie Feast, Sandy Purdy from Prairie Berries, the largest producer of Saskatoon berries in the country, Mary Woloshyn, a 90-year-old Ukrainian baba who adds the berries to her perogies, and the pride of Manitoba Fred Penner. Warning, don't listen to this show on an empty stomach.
