How the internet turned from a tool for democracy to a threat against it
The promise of the internet was that it would empower citizens. It paved the way for popular uprisings, like the Arab Spring and it helped Barack Obama carve a path to the White House. Now, the web has become a threat to democracy...spreading fake news and outright lies. And it is being dominated by corporate interests. We'll look at this shift and consider whether it's possible to reclaim the internet for the democratic good. Our guests are Astra Taylor, a Canadian-American whose books include The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age; Pia Mancini an Argentine political organizer and democracy activist; and Elamin Abdelmahmoud, editor of curation for BuzzFeed News and social media editor for BuzzFeed Canada.
