Northwestern communities discuss ways to reduce plastics in landfills

Up North

Leaders of a number of northwestern Ontario communities were talking trash over the weekend. Mayors and reeves of the Thunder Bay District Municipal League were trying to come up with ways to keep plastics out of community landfills. Many municipal dumps are getting close to capacity, with officials also blaming plastic garbage for unsightly pollution in their communities. The discussion happened just hours before Monday's announcement from the federal government that it will ban single-use plastics, such as bags, straws and cutlery, as early as 2021. Rick Dumas is the president of the municipal league and the mayor of Marathon.
