Alternatives to grass to combat Montreal's urban heat island effect

The city of Montreal is looking to spruce up its landscaping, by finding an alternative to grass... but it's not just for the look. The idea is to find plants that are better for the soil - meaning less maintenance - and that can offest the heat island effect this summer.It's being tested out through a pilot project in Ahuntsic-Cartierville - along Laurentien Boulevard and Lachapelle Street. We speak with Elise Beauregard, a landscape architect specializing in urban soil. She's also the president of LIEU -- a non profit organization that researches urban ecology.
