The Winnipeg General Strike Audio Archives
The Winnipeg General Strike began one hundred years ago today. On May 15th, 1919 , 25 to 35 thousand people walked off the job. Even the strike organizers were surprised by the number of people willing to risk their jobs to make a point. It lasted for six weeks and ended in bloodshed. In the early 1970's, the Manitoba Museum interviewed strikers and witnesses, as part of an oral history project. Tom Jokinen listened through some of those recordings, as well as the CBC archives from fifty years ago. Marcy Markusa sat down with Tom to talk about the 1919 strike.
