Boyd Laanstra on the bank note of the year, the Viola Desmond $10 bill

Fresh Air

It's a Canadian bank note like no other. And this week our 10 dollar bill was named bank note of the year by the International Bank Note Society. The purple bill is the first vertical banknote issued in Canada, and it features human rights activist Viola Desmond who challenged racial segregation in the 1940s. One of the people behind the newly designed bank note was Boyd Laanstra who works for the Bank of Canada. We asked him how he felt about getting this award.
