Remembering Melissa Atkinson

A New Day

Friends and colleagues are mourning the loss of Melissa Dawn Atkinson. Her funeral was held Thursday in Whitehorse. The 45-year-old died last week. The Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation citizen, with Kaska and Tlingit roots, was among the first Indigenous Yukon women to graduate from law school. Atkinson worked as both a prosecutor and defence lawyer in Yukon courts. She also ran for the NDP in the last federal election. Sandi Coleman spoke with two of her colleagues Jessica Lott-Thompson and Bruce Warnsby.
