Gâteau à l'orange: a recipe that survived the Holocaust

The Doc Project

Alex Buckman is fighting hate with an heirloom recipe. Buckman is the president of the Vancouver Child Survivors of the Holocaust and is sharing the story of his aunt Becky Teitelbaum, who raised him after the war, his parents having died at Auschwitz. While in the Ravensbrück concentration camp, Becky wrote over 100 recipes for dishes she remembers cooking in her former life, before the war, with stolen pencil and paper. One of them was gâteau à l'orange. After coming to Canada, she made it for Buckman every Sunday. So he would never forget.
