It was 1971 and Canada was trying to arrange a cultural exchange with China. A few months earlier it had formally recognized the People's Republic of China. A month before the scheduled departure, the Canadian officials got word the visit may not be approved. That's when Saskatchewan farmer Evelyn Potter got a call. Keith Carlson is a history prof at the U of S and co-curator of an exhibition of photos Evelynn took during her visit to China. He joins me here in the studio.
