'Black Hair' short documentary director Badria Abubaker

The Homestretch

Ask any woman (or man for that matter) and they'll tell you: hair has power. How you wear it, who can touch it, whether you colour it -- or chop it all off. It's often one of the first things people notice about you. But for many black people, their natural kinky hair is a source of complex emotions -- including anxiety and even embarrassment on occasion. A short documentary film called Black Hair looks at five Calgarians' complex relationship with their hair. Badria Abubaker created the film as part of her Journalism degree at Mount Royal University. Black Hair debuts tonight at the Memorial Park Library. Badria joined host Doug Dirks in studio with the details.
