To Kid or Not to Kid

The Passionate Eye

Why do women often feel under uncomfortable pressure to have children? Filmmaker Maxine Trump turns the camera on herself as she confronts the idea of not having kids. To Kid or Not to Kid explores the cultural pressures and harsh criticism childfree women regularly experience, as well as the personal impact this decision may have on her own relationship. Maxine meets other women reckoning with their choice. Megan, 25, struggles to get medical permission to undergo elective sterilization before the age of 30, but doctors are unwilling to grant her the procedure. Victoria lives with the backlash of publicly acknowledging that she made a mistake when she had a child.

MORE: Since the age of 5, I’ve known that I don’t want to be a mother

As Maxine tells her close circle of family and friends about her decision to live childfree, will they understand? Will her husband accept it? Or will it confirm her greatest fear: that she will be ostracized, or made to feel selfish or odd?
