Burton Winters was reported missing from the northern Labrador community of Makkovik on Sunday evening, Jan. 29. He was last seen leaving his grandmother's home on a snowmobile earlier that afternoon. His body was found three days later on Feb. 1. His snowmobile was found on the ice about 11 kilometres northeast of Makkovik on Jan. 31. Police said Winters froze to death after walking about 19 kilometres on sea ice from his abandoned snowmobile. RCMP officials, area residents, provincial Fire and Emergency Services officials, and military officials were involved in the search.
