Hey Folks,

 

Our first big Fall system of the year is rolling though NL and it has a little taste of everything!

 

Rain, Wind, Fog, Drizzle... and SNOW! In behind, the coldest airmass of the season.

 

As of Thursday afternoon, we have many Wind Warnings in effect for Western Newfoundland, the Northern Peninsula and Eastern Labrador. These areas will see gusts 100-120 km/h. We also have Rainfall Warnings in effect for the North Coast of Labrador, where 50+ mm is expected.

Here are a few main points, with this mess over the next few days & into the weekend!

 

-Our first low & cold front pushing through today/tonight, is the much bigger of the 2 systems. As mentioned above, it's bringing a lot of Wind & Rain. Western Newfoundland, will see Southeasterly Gusts to 100 km/h ahead of the cold front this afternoon, along with 10-15 mm of Rain.

-Heavy rain & strong winds are moving from West to East through Labrador today. 30-40 mm in Churchill Falls today, before a change to Snow tonight!

-Western Labrador is the first to see a change to Snow, as of Noon, you're already mixing to Snow and Lab City/Wabush could pick up 2-5 cm today/tonight!

 

-Winds become West/Southwest in behind the Cold front. The Northern Peninsula and Southeastern Labrador are going to take the brunt of the Wind. Gusts 100-120 km/h are expected from Gros Morne in the South to Cartwright & HV-GB in the North. The West Coast of Newfoundland, from PAB to Corner Brook, is looking at 80-90 km/h gusts. From St. John's, up the Northeast Coast to the Baie Verte Peninsula and even along the South Coast, gusts 70-80 km/h are on the way Thurs evening and overnight.

-Wet Snow is the main story tonight for Labrador City/Wabush, you could see a trace of Snow. In Churchill Falls, 5 cm of Snow could fall! Eastern & Coastal Labrador will see Rain, with wet snow mixing in overnight. Nain to Hopedale will be the bulls-eye overnight with 40 mm! In the Southeast parts of Labrador, generally 10-20 mm.

 

-Winds remain really gusty along the Northern Peninsula and Eastern Labrador in the morning (100-120 km/h), however will taper through the day. However, winds will remain strong (generally 30-60) for most of the day across NL. 50-70 km/h for the South Coast of the Island and Eastern Labrador.

-The North Coast of Labrador stays quite unsettled with periods of Rain & Snow wrapping around the low. Further South, HV-GB and the Southeast should see some Sunshine between a few showers or flurries.

-The Island will see Sunshine, then increasing clouds and rain from our next low. The West Coast will have a wet Friday afternoon with periods of rain, which will likely mix with wet snow over the long range mountains!

 

-Our next system crosses the Island bring periods of rain and gusty Northwest winds. In behind the front, cold temperatures mean a very good chance of Wet Snow over the high elevations of the long range mountains and possibly even lower elevation along sections of  the Northern Peninsula & West Coast. The latest Canadian & European models continue to show some wet snow falling behind the front, over parts of Central Nfld early on Saturday morning! It's still a bit early, so stay tuned to the Live Blog for the latest on this.

-Periods of Rain along the cold front crossing the Island could be steady at times. Forecast models are currently flirting with a 15-30 mm idea for parts of Central/Eastern Newfoundland, with some heavier pockets. We'll have a better idea on this tomorrow, as the front approaches.

 

-Our Cold front will bring morning rain (and as mentioned, maybe more) to Central and Eastern Newfoundland. However, as of now, things are expected to clear with some Sunny breaks by late Saturday afternoon/evening. 

-Strong & cool Northwesterly Winds will keep afternoon temperatures near 6°-8° across the Island! The wind will make it feel even cooler!

-Those brisk winds will mean onshore clouds & showers for the West Coast of the Island. Wouldn't rule out wet flurries in the higher elevations through the day on Saturday.

-A breezy cool day in Labrador as well, with temperatures near the freezing mark. Looks like a mostly cloudy day, with a good chance of wet flurries & showers.

-Western Labrador: High's near 0° or -1°. I'm watching for the possibility of the first day time high, not to rise above 0°, since back on May 11th.

 

-Cape to Cabot race day in St. John's! Right now it looks cool, dry & breezy. I'll have a much more detailed look at this tomorrow on the Live Blog as well as Here & Now.

-Generally another cool, breezy day across the Island, which a good chance of seeing Sunshine.

-Strong Winds continue along the Coast of Labrador on Sunday, with a good chance of showers and flurries. Some Sunshine breaking through inland.
