Mattel Barbie meets real-life Barbie in artist's render

Storified by CBC News Community· Wed, Jul 03 2013 15:59:04

An artist has taken tall, unusually slender and always put-together Barbie and turned the doll into an average 19-year-old American girl.

The new Barbie is almost 150 pounds and 163.3 centimetres tall, which would give her a body mass index of 25.5, falling on the low end of the overweight spectrum.
@barbie you are AWESOME!!!!!!!! LOVE this!!!!!!!!! lovato
Like the average American 19-year-old woman, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the new Barbie has:

- A waist circumference of 85.4 centimetres.
- A mid-arm circumference of 29.3 centimetres.
- Upper legs measuring 38.6 centimetres.

Together, these measurements create an image of Barbie that is unfamiliar, as most know Barbie to be leggy and very thin.
Do you want a perfect plastic girl?..go buy barbie!!binko's.
After a series of misleading tweets from teen pop star Demi Lovato there was some confusion over who created the images.
1 of my biggest dreams, having collected Barbies since I was a kid, is to have my own Barbie BUT with my actual body type.. Weight & heightdemetria lovato
She mistakenly attributed the artist's images to the people behind Barbie, leading legions of her fans to believe that the new Barbie was a real product.
@barbie you are AWESOME!!!!!!!! LOVE this!!!!!!!!! lovato
Can I also say, that... That new @barbie's got BACK!!!!! Hahahaha #bootybootybootyboottrockineverywheredemetria lovato

The actual person behind the realistic Barbie is Nickolay Lamm. This isn't Lamm's first time giving Barbie a makeover. Once inspired by another artist's viral image of Barbie without makeup, Lamm used photoshop to strip other Barbie dolls of their makeovers.
Hahaha!!!! Sooo realistic finally #barbie #makeup #real #realwoman #naturalgirl #highlights hahahaha #okilikemakeupbutikeepitnatural #toy #notagoodinfluenceforlittlegirls #lipstick #mascara #eyeshadow Carolina Portas
Both artists' creations copied popular tabloid magazine photo spreads showing Hollywood stars without makeup.
For many, Lamm's most recent Barbie makeover illustrated how unrealistic the doll really looks. Many took to social media to congratulate the artist on giving the doll a more natural look.
This mock up of a Barbie with a more realistic body really highlights how freakish Barbie is: Clements
omg, the new barbie doll might as well be the cutest thing ever. ri.
But, not everyone appreciated Lamm's efforts, saying the transformation was unnecessary and claiming that Barbie's looks do not actually negatively influence young girls.
The new barbie is far too weird! #ew #barbiemegs
people get so pissy about barbie dolls i'm sorry but when i was little i didn't think "wow barbie is perfect i need to look like her!!!!"┬┐laura?
Though a quick YouTube search reveals an abundance of demonstration videos illustrating how to achieve the perfect plastic Barbie-like look.

And of course, there is Valeria Lukyanova and Justin Jedlica. Both surgically changed their looks to appear more like the famous Barbie and Ken dolls.
What do you think of Barbie's new look? Should Mattel create a more realistic looking doll?
