Meet the 2013 Nobel Prize winners

Annual prizes for medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics announced Oct. 7-14

Alfred Nobel's will stipulated that most of his vast fortune be used to create a prize honouring excellence in medicine, literature, the sciences and peace promotion. A prize for economics was created in 1969 and is also given out by the Nobel Foundation.

Medicine: Rothman, Schekman and Suedhof

Medicine: Rothman, Schekman and Suedhof

James E. Rothman, professor of biomedical sciences at Yale University, Randy W. Schekman, professor of cell and developmental biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and German-born Thomas C. Suedhof, professor in the School of Medicine at Stanford University discovered how hormones, enzymes and other key materials are transported within cells. The discovery sheds some light on diseases including diabetes and tetanus.

Britain's Peter Higgs and Francois Englert of Belgium won the Nobel Prize for physics on Tuesday for predicting the existence of the Higgs boson particle that explains how elementary matter attained the mass to form stars and planets.

Chemistry: Karplus, Levitt and Warshel

Chemistry: Karplus, Levitt and Warshel

Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel won the Nobel Prize in chemistry "for laying the foundation for computer models used to understand and predict chemical processes," the Associated Press reported. They are affiliated with the University of Strasbourg and Harvard, the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Southern California, respectively.

Literature: Alice Munro

Alice Munro won the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming the first Canadian woman to take the award since its launch in 1901. Munro, 82, only the 13th woman given the award, is considered one of the world's greatest writers of short stories.

Peace: Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is overseeing the destruction of Syria's chemical-weapons stockpiles, won the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons."
