Montreal students protest tuition hikes
Key events in Quebec's debate on accessible education
Last Updated: May 24, 2012
The debate over affordable education has spurred massive - and at times violent - rallies in Montreal's downtown core in recent months. The action began in late November with a massive rally. Since then, peaceful marches have been punctuated with violent outbursts that have resulted in hundreds of arrests and damage to businesses and political offices. Quebec students have had a long history of protesting tuition increases as fees have steadily climbed from $500 in 1990 to the proposed $3,793 fee.
