Lou Reed, founding member of The Velvet Underground has died at age 71. His literary agent has confirmed to The Associated Press that Reed had succumbed to an ailment related to a recent liver transplant.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942, he co-founded The Velvet Underground with John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker in 1965. The Velvet Underground is now considered one of the most influential bands in the history of rock music.
Reed went on to a successful solo career after leaving the band in 1970. After a long battle with alcohol and drugs, Reed's liver failed and he had to have a liver transplant in June, 2013.
