BEFORE & AFTER | Record rains drench southern England

Pounding storms flood farms, homes

CBC News Last Updated: Feb. 20, 2014

NASA has released a new satellite photo of Somerset Levels — a low-lying farming region in southwestern England — that reveals the devastating effect of the driving rains that have battered the country over the past two months.

Sediment-filled waters have swamped 17,000 hectares of land and 150 homes. In total, 372 mm of rain fell over southern England in December 2013 and January 2014 — the largest amount recorded over a two-month span since 1910. Move the arrows from side to side in the photos below to see more.
