Grey Bruce Health Services (GBHS) operates six hospitals throughout the Grey Bruce region. It serves a population of approximately 170,000 with a mix of urban and rural communities. There is also an influx of seasonal visitors.

Grey Bruce is home to high population of seniors. The average age of acute care patients is 60.

The Owen Sound hospital serves the whole region and offers complex surgeries, total joint replacements, cancer surgeries and a range of diagnostic services including MRI and CT scans.

The rural hospitals offer a wide range of primary and ambulatory care services and all have 24-hour emergency departments. Over 200 physicians have privileges to practice at Grey Bruce hospitals.

GBHS works closely with the two other hospital corporations in the area – South Bruce Grey Health Centre and Hanover and District Hospital. To maximize collective resources, GBHS shares technology, with all 11 hospitals in its network.

Accreditation Canada, a non-profit organization that accredits hospitals, requires hospitals to compare the medications a patient is on when admitted to those that will be given in the hospital. Half the hospitals CBC assessed follow this procedure at least 84 per cent of the time.

Regular handwashing is considered the single most important way to reduce the spread of hospital-acquired infections. In half the hospitals CBC assessed, staff followed proper handwashing procedures at least 86 per cent of the time.

Studies have linked a higher percentage of single-bed rooms to better infection control, reduced medical errors, fewer falls, improved sleep and better patient outcomes. In half the hospitals CBC assessed, at least 25 per cent of beds are in single rooms.
