The race

Ron MacKinley is the longest serving member of the legislature, having held this area for the Liberals since 1985.

The issue

The Trans-Canada Highway runs through the middle of Cornwall, and a bypass has been discussed for years. The route through town is considered dangerous, but many motorists pass through the town's commercial district because of it.

District profile

This district is a mix of urban, suburban and rural. Rural areas include farms and a significant shellfishery along the West River. Cornwall (pop. 4,677) is the major centre.

As well as being a bedroom community for Charlottetown, Cornwall has a retail centre of its own and a small business park.

Cornwall is one of P.E.I.'s fastest growing communities. Developers are eying the farmland that surrounds the town.
