A bus carrying Russian religious pilgrims crashed in Ukraine on Saturday, killing 14 of the 45 people on board, according to a government official.

A spokeswoman for Ukraine's Emergencies Ministry said the crash took place at around 5:30 a.m. local time when the driver apparently lost control.

The vehicle veered off the road and overturned.

The spokeswoman added that a further 29 people were hospitalized with injuries from the crash near Chernihiv, about 150 kilometres northeast of Kyiv.

Russian news reports said the pilgrims were headed for the Holy Dormition Monastery in western Ukraine's Pochayev, one of the major monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
